Chris Bowen MP sits in Cabinet as the Minister for Human Services and the Minister for Financial Services, Superannuation and Corporate Law.
Chris lives with his family in Smithfield. He was educated at Smithfield Public School, St Johns Park High School and the University of Sydney, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Economics.
Chris joined the Labor Party in 1988 at the age of 16.
Chris served on Fairfield Council from 1995 until 2002, during which time he was Mayor of Fairfield from 1998 to 1999 and President of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) from 2000 to 2002.
Chris was elected to the Federal Parliament as the Member for Prospect in October 2004 and later appointed as Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Revenue & Competition Policy.
Following the historic election of Labor in 2007, Chris was appointed to the new Rudd Government Ministry – sworn in by the Governor General as the Assistant Treasurer, Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs.
During this time, Chris oversaw significant reform in improving fairness and integrity in the tax system and enacting the largest reform agenda to consumer and competition policy in decades – to promote competition and transparency and empowering consumers. During the time, Chris also had carriage for the Government's policies that were directed at making Australia a financial services hub.
He was also on the Government Expenditure Review Committee, ensuring the Governments agenda was implemented in the federal Budget.
On 9 June 2009, Chris was elevated to the Cabinet and appointed Minister for Human Services and the Minister for Financial Services, Superannuation and Corporate Law.
